Boot Shrine

An iconic interactive in-store display installed in NYC and Tokyo.

As part of our design work on the Timberland flagship store in New York, we collaborated on an iconic new interactive element for the space: the Boot Shrine. The Boot Shrine is also now a feature in the Tokyo flagship store too.

The brief was to create an interactive “retail shrine” for the Original Yellow Boot aka 10061, which needed to be engaging, informative and a dynamic tool for customers to connect with Timerbland’s rich history and discover the boot's technical features and benefits.

When idle, the Shrine cycles through a visual history of the Boot’s cultural impact, which can be controlled by customers by interacting with the timeline dial. Picking up the Boot launches the features mode, where the customer navigates using the Boot itself. A 3D model on-screen matches the position of the Boot in hand and reveals different features of the product depending on how the Boot is orientated.

A key part of our work on the project was researching, curating and creating content for the timeline, by delving into the rich history of Timberland. We focused on iconic cultural moments including its prominence in the Paninaro movement, in the UK rave scene, in Harajuku street fashion and the unique relationship forged between Hip Hop culture and Timberland.

To bring a greater understanding of the product benefits we used locations on the boot that would trigger key information on the display. By placing a 3D printed last in the boot, which included a gyroscope and RFID, we could offer a very detailed look at the product features offered.

We created the concept for the Boot Shrine, undertook the UX design and our sister company Against Time created the 3D components for the interactive timeline. Phygital built the interactive app and gyro tech, while Bednark installed the final reactive display in store NYC. Considered as a scalable and portable concept, the Boot Shrine also features in the new Tokyo flagship Timberland store.

The scalability of this concept means it can be utilised globally. We have created design variations that work across the various tiers of store in preparation for further roll out of the Boot Shrine.
